A Story About Apples Love And Survival

NORTH MIAMI BEACH (CBS4) ― Herman and Roma Rosenblat have been married for 50 years. Theirs is a love story about chance and fate, and good triumphing over evil.

It began when Herman was a 12-year-old boy barely surviving in a Nazi concentration camp.

"One day my mother came to me in a dream and said, 'I'm going to send you an angel'," said Herman Rosenblat.

The next day Roma, who was living in a village, saw Herman through a barbed wire fence.

"He was very handsome, good looking, and I was lonely," said Roma Rosenblat. "I threw him an apple or a piece of bread."

It went on for six months until Herman was shipped out.

"I said oh my goodness, he was so handsome, and all of a sudden I can't see him no more, so I was very sad," said Roma.

A dozen years went by and Herman was working in America. A friend fixed him up on a blind date, something he wasn't too fond of. During their conversation the two realized they had met before through that barbed wire fence.

"I proposed to her on the spot," he said.

The enduring story of love that started with an apple was just too much for Hollywood to resist. It's being made into a movie to be called "The Flower of the Fence".

Already Herman has helped pen and illustrate a children's book called "Angel Girl". He also lectures children about his experiences imparting the lesson he learned from his father to love and tolerate.

It's not just the secret to a long and happy marriage, but the secret to a long and happy life.
