Chicago Building Imploded For Batman Movie

Windy City Wowed By Controlled, Massive Explosion

CHICAGO (CBS) ― A huge explosion and fireball rocked the the West Side on Wednesday afternoon--but it was all scripted for Hollywood, a scene for the new Batman movie being filmed in Chicago.

A building at the old Brach's candy factory was blown up around 2:15 p.m. local time, sending a huge ball of flame and smoke into the sky. The makers of the latest Batman franchise--"The Dark Knight''--had converted a building on the Brach's compound into Gotham Hospital for the shoot.

The blast leveled a six-story office complex, but firefighters were on the scene to put out the flames. Much of the fire was extinguished by 2:30 p.m.

Kris Habermehl, with CBS station WBBM-TV, was over the scene and immediately went on the radio to assure people that the blast was all part of the script and not a terrorist act.
