What's Worse?
(CBS4)
What's worse for your family, a loaded gun or a swimming pool? Things you might think are worse than others may not be.
What's worse, being obese or suffering from anorexia nervosa?
People we asked on the street responded "being obese."
But that's not true. Medically, more people die from anorexia: 20% of people die from the psychological disorder where as an obese woman at 25 still only has a .01% risk of death.
Next: As a parent what's worse to have in your home, a swimming pool or a loaded gun?
"I think that there is more injuries and fatalities for swimming pools," said Alyx Kellington who took our survey.
That's correct. A pool is 100 times riskier. 500 children drown in pools each year in the U.S., and less than half of that, 200, children die from gun fire. And there are many more guns out there than there are pools.
What's worse marijuana or cigarettes? "Cigarettes absolutely cigarettes," answered another person we surveyed.
Yes that's true. Legality aside, no studies have shown increased death due to marijuana, and we know that not to be the case with cigarettes.
Next: What's worse, air pollution or second hand smoke? They both have carcinogens. They both lead to respiratory problems, and they both kill 22,000-69,000 people a year.
And lastly, what's worse being married and miserable or single and happy?
"Being married and miserable is much worse," added another survey participant.
And she is right. Unhappily married people have higher blood pressure and stress. But if you are in a happy marriage then you live longer than even happy single people.
