For high school students, the Senior Prom is a once in a lifetime experience. For a Houston student it was a very different kind of experience. Not only didn't she make it to her prom because of her dress; she also ended the night in handcuffs. Now she wants a refund, but the school isn't budging.
17-year old Marche Taylor had a dress custom made for her prom at Madison High. But when she showed up at the door, she was denied admittance because a school official said the midriff baring gown was too skimpy for the school sponsored event and violated school dress code. Taylor recalls that night vividly.
"She shook her head and said 'no, you're not getting into this prom'," said Taylor, "we argued back and forth because I wanted to know why I couldn't get into my prom."
Taylor said her friends gathered around her in the lobby of the Sugarland Marriot where the prom was held and tried to wrap her dress around her and pin it in place to provide more covering. Taylor said the school official then told her she still wasn't going to be allowed in because she didn't have any undergarments on.
Taylor said she was furious and demanded that the money she paid for the prom tickets be returned to her. That's when the arguing apparently got out of hand and someone called the police who led Taylor away in handcuffs.
"They didn't give me any options but to go home or go to jail," said Taylor.
Madison High principal Aubrey Todd stands behind the decision not to admit Taylor to the prom.
"It was revealing in such a way that it would not be appropriate for the prom," said Todd.
Taylor says she still loves her dress, even though it cost her dearly in the end. Taylor spent the night behind bars. The school and the police have decided not to take any further action.
