Officials Set Traps For Colo. Pond Creature

LOVELAND, Colo. (CBS) ― Wildlife officers are hoping chicken and fish will lure a mystery creature into traps set around a Loveland, Colo., pond.

The cages are actually mountain lion traps.

"We just thought we would diversify the bait a little bit to give us a better chance of seeing what he prefers," a wildlife official said.

Monday, wildlife officers set up two cages on the banks of Jayhawker Ponds where the reported five-to-seven-foot long reptile has been spotted. A boy was fishing with friends Wednesday night when he said the reptile lunged out of the water and scared them.

"We were sitting there getting ready to cast our poles out in the water and then something really big jumped out of the water and tried to get on the dock but it was too big and fell right back into the water," John Peck told CBS affiliate KCNC-TV.

Loveland resident Bill Schaft said he also recently spotted the creature rising out the of pond.

"None of my friends believed me. They thought I was up to something," he told KCNC.

This is the first time crews have tried to trap what is likely a pet cayman someone has abandoned.

The Colorado Division of Wildlife also put chicken on hooks and wire on trees around the pond.
