Officials Seize Alligator 'Ziggy' From L.A. Home

SLIDESHOW: Animals Wild And On The Loose

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (CBS) ― A call to the Department of Animal Services about an exotic animal being raised illegally in a North Hollywood home was "Ziggy", a 5-6 foot long alligator.

The owner, who has raised the 5-year-old gator since it was small, surrendered his pet to the Officers without incident. Ziggy is said to be in good health and will be handed over Friday to a local herpetology society member, who has the proper permits and environment for the alligator.
Alligators are a restricted species in California and require a State Permit for possession. An average male alligator can grow to 13 feet long. They are generally found in the Southeastern United States, primarily in Florida, where alligators thrive in the state's wetlands.

Animal Services asks the public to notify them of any wild animals that are illegally kept in their neighborhoods in order to protect both neighbors and the animals involved.
