3 Men Nabbed After Robbery, Gunfire, Police Chase
It Started With An Alleged Holdup Of A Burger King In Boynton Beach
DEERFIELD BEACH (CBS4) ―
Police apprehended their third suspect early Saturday morning in connection to a Burger King holdup in Boynton Beach, leading police in a chase on I-95, in which gunfire was exchanged, and eventually men bailing out from their getaway vehicle, bringing in K-9 teams and three police agencies.
After a gun was put to the restaurant manager's head and money stolen, the men reportedly fled firing shots in the parking lot. Surveillance video showed the three masked men wearing black clothing, gloves and a 9 millimeter handgun during the armed robbery.
Police tried to stop the getaway vehicle late Friday night, but the three men managed to speed away onto I-95, turning it into a police pursuit.
Gunfire was exchanged and bullets smashed the windshield of a Florida Highway Patrol car; the officer was not injured.
The car reportedly exited at Hillsboro Boulevard and the men bailed out in the 100 Block of SW 3rd Ct., near Dixie Highway. Police set up a perimeter and canvassed the area using K-9 dogs and SWAT team.
Two suspects were arrested, and the third, a 19-year-old, was found hiding in a shed several hours later. He suffered from a gunshot injury, and taken to North Broward Medical Center.
"The complete disregard that these three suspects had for those employees, for then innocent bystander whose car they shot at, for the police officer that they fired at is really despicable the complete disregard they had for the lives of others," said Stephanie Slater of the Boynton Beach police department.
Three law enforcement agencies - FHP, Boynton Beach Police and the Broward Sheriff's Office - involved 90 officers in this effort.
Burger King customers learned the news on Saturday said they could not believe what had happend: "I'm a little concerned and you could see that there are not as many customers as usual on a Saturday night," said Michael Cummings.
Officers have not confirmed if these men are the suspects they have been looking for, allegedly responsible for a string of armed fast-food restaurant robberies in recent months in Broward County.
