Deerfield Neighbors Fed Up With Crime Hold Meeting

DEERFIELD BEACH (CBS4) ― Tuesday night a Broward County community looked for ways to fight crime. Parents, pastors, and community members came out to hear from families a week after a three year old girl was shot in her own home with a stray bullet.

Marilyn Kennedy is new to Deerfield Beach, with a background in community outreach for almost a decade. she came out to a church in Deerfield beach and spoke with CBS4's Jorge Estevez.

After hearing about Salayah Buie--the three year old girl struck by a stray bullet in her aunt's Deerfield beach home last week--Kennedy was glad she came. "It is in most urban communities it is reality.. and they don't understand or know that there is a way out," Marilyn said before the meeting began.

Kennedy who is taking care of a 16 year old wants to know more about what all parents care about, drugs, crime and the more serious gang activity all prevalent throughout our communities.

In the crowd at the Bethlehm Baptist Church was Broward Sheriff candidates Scott Israeli and Wiley Thompson, who talked about dealing with today's crime, like the bullet that could have killed little Salayah.

The little girl is home now, but will have to spend weeks in a pink colored cast, and not for the reasons why a little girl could be in a cast, like a bad fall off a bicycle, but because she was shot.

Crimes parents in this Deerfield Beach Community want to end for the sake of the children. "I would like to be a part of an action plan to show them a way out Marilyn said."

The group of about 40 people also talked about the need for law enforcement officers to respond quicker to emergency calls here in Deerfield Beach. Candidate for Broward Sheriff Wiley Thompson talked about his proposal to have officers work 12 hour days. Wiley said that way he would increase police presence in communities that need it the most.
