Florida Keys Tourists Ready For Evacuations
MARATHON (CBS4) ―
There was no anxiety that could be sensed, but many tourists in the Florida Keys were already well aware that they must leave by Saturday morning as Hurricane Ike gets closer.
A vacation was cut short for a Ft. Myers family who was already heading out Friday night. They came to Marathon to get a break, but all they are getting now is the boot.
"We were planning on dinner and drinks with a friend but the hotel called and said we were going to get a knock at eight in the morning if we didn't leave before," said Kim Gibson. "So we decided to leave tonight to beat the traffic."
They aren't thrilled about their drive through the night to make it home, but they are taking the warning concerning Ike seriously.
"I think it's scary. I think we've dodged a lot this year, especially with Fay, but it's scary. It looks pretty impressive out there," said Gibson.
Over at the neighborhood Home Depot store, crews are working after hours to have the store fully stocked for the late rush expected Saturday.
"We're finishing the down stock of hurricane supplies," said Dennis Lee, with Home Depot. "We're stayed open a half hour until customers quit coming."
In Key West, some Miami tourists were idly enjoying a night on Duval Street, but they were aware they needed to go on Saturday.
