MIAMI (CBS4) ― Officials are looking to make the troublesome I-95 Express lanes better to navigate and safer, starting with a move Tuesday night to make containment poles more colorful along the route.

Workers are installing 500 orange poles at the north and south ends of the 95 Express lanes. The thinking is those poles will make the express lanes more visible. CBS4 News has been reporting ever since these lanes opened about the numerous problems, drivers swerving in and out of the lanes, like they're taking some sort of driving test. A number of accidents have occurred, such as a rollover crash Tuesday.

Transportation officials say when they conceived this idea to lighten the traffic load on 95, they forgot to account for that unique species: The South Florida driver.

"We rank very high every year on the aggressiveness of our drivers in South Florida," said FDOT District Secretary Gus Pego. "I guess the lessons learned would be to try to take that more into consideration in our normal design processes."

There is another phase to this fix. Transportation officials told CBS4's Carey Codd they will put up more poles in the next few weeks. They hope by cutting down on the space between the poles, that will stop drivers from swerving in and out.
