MIAMI (CBS4) ― The next time you head to the pet store, think twice if you plan to take your dog with you in the back of a pick-up truck; you could face a $250 fine.

Miami-Dade County has updated their pet ordinances. If you have a pick-up truck, you can only transport your pet in a carrier tied up in the back, or you can put your dog in a harness and tie both sides of the animal to the truck.

The goal is to keep the animal from hurting itself, or causing an accident on our streets.

This is already the law in Broward County.

Other changes to Miami-Dade's ordinances include requiring pet stores to microchip their animals and register the customers who buy them. Owners will also be required to keep animals in heat confined.
