Study: Gas Price Hike Means Fewer Traffic Deaths

(CBS4.com) There may be at least one silver lining to the recent rise in gas prices. A new study shows that as gas prices increase, deaths on America's road decrease.

The study, by professors from the University of Alabama and Harvard Medical School, found that as gas prices increase by 10%, there's a 2.3% decrease in vehicular deaths.

Younger drivers did even better. For every 10% rise in gas prices, deaths among drivers between the age of 15 and 17 drop 6%.

The data in the study only went until 2006, and with gas now heading over $4.00 a gallon, the authors believe the drop will be even higher. The researchers also point out that the relation between prices and deaths works in the opposite direction as well, with deaths increasing as gas prices drop.
