Lanes Of Confusion On I-95
Express lanes prevent drivers from exiting for 9 miles
Lanes created to help alleviate traffic problems
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
The new "95 Express" lanes have generated as much confusion as they have eased any traffic problems. During Friday morning's rush hour, chaos and confusion were popular themes among drivers, but what about Monday morning's commute?
Engineers with the Department of Transportation said they spent the weekend studying the idea of putting up more signs in hopes of clearing up the confusion.
"It's real confusing, it's real confusing. It's gonna(sic) be a lot of accidents I think," said driver Lucian Jones.
Part of the confusion comes from the fact that if you get in the express lanes, you're stuck in them until the Golden Glades. Some drivers don't like being stuck in the lanes and are trying to get out of the lanes in between the white plastic sticks meant to be barricades.
"What we have is an opportunity to educated our drivers a little bit better that once they get into the managed lanes, not to panic," said Gus Pego of FDOT. "We noticed the signs are not very clear. We've been working on that all weekend to try to get a clearer message out."
"They should have put up a wall. I think it would've been better than those little lines," driver Sterling Clowers observed.
FDOT officials say they can't put up a wall because it would require them to reconfigure the expressway and add another lane. They will be looking into adding more of the white poles so that there's less space between them to weave through.
